This seven-night photo safari is led by professional wildlife photographer Nick Wigmore and is designed around working a single, highly productive ecosystem in depth rather than moving between locations.

Based at Msandile River Lodge, you’ll explore riverine woodland, seasonal lagoons, and open floodplains where wildlife activity remains consistently strong throughout the dry season. South Luangwa is renowned for its exceptional leopard density, active lion prides, and frequent predator-prey interactions, all set against a landscape shaped by the Luangwa River.

By remaining in one region, the focus shifts from covering ground to building opportunity, allowing more time at sightings, repeat access to known wildlife territories, and the ability to photograph behaviour rather than chance encounters.

Game drives are scheduled around optimal light and activity, giving you the space to observe, anticipate, and capture meaningful wildlife moments under the guidance of an experienced photographic host.

The Photo Safari Experience in South Luangwa

South Luangwa offers one of the most immersive photographic environments in Africa.

The Luangwa River acts as a natural magnet for wildlife, drawing elephants, buffalo, antelope, and predators into a relatively concentrated area. This creates dynamic photographic opportunities, from leopard movement through riverine forest to lion activity across open floodplains and interactions along lagoon systems.

Each day is structured around the rhythms of the environment. Early morning and late afternoon drives allow access to the most productive light and wildlife movement, while the small-group format ensures time and flexibility at key sightings.

Between drives, there is space to review images, discuss technique, or simply reset for the next session. The aim is not just to see wildlife, but to engage with it in a way that supports creative growth; observing behaviour, anticipating movement, and working with light to produce stronger, more intentional imagery.
This is a safari built for photographers who want to slow down, learn in the field, and make the most of every opportunity South Luangwa offers.

This safari is limited to just six guests and typically fills well in advance.
If this departure fits your plans, we recommend securing your place early.

This Photo Safari Itinerary

Please note: This itinerary is subject to change due to weather, logistics, or wildlife conditions. Your guides will adapt daily plans to maximise photographic opportunities and guest comfort.

Fixed wing air transfer from Lusaka to Mfuwe airport.

Short road transfer/game drive from airstrip to lodge.

Arrival & Foundations

Your journey into one of Africa’s most celebrated wildlife photography destinations begins with your arrival into Mfuwe via Lusaka. On arrival, you’ll be met and transferred to the beautiful Msandile River Lodge, set along the banks of the Luangwa River.

After settling in, the afternoon is designed to gently transition you into the rhythm of the bush. Following a safari briefing and gear preparation session, we head out on our first photographic game drive.

This opening drive is not about rushing sightings, it’s about resetting your eye for Africa. We begin working on light awareness, composition fundamentals, and field technique, ensuring everyone starts the safari with a clear photographic mindset.

Our first full day begins with an early start, intentional field time, and structured learning in real wildlife environments.

Morning and afternoon drives focus on:
– Working with directional light
– Understanding subject positioning
– Anticipating animal behaviour for storytelling

South Luangwa is famed for its relaxed leopard population and strong predator density, offering ideal real-world learning opportunities.

Between drives, we begin informal image reviews and technical discussions, ensuring learning happens both in the field and back at camp.

By now, the pace of the safari begins to slow, not in activity, but in mindset.

Today’s focus shifts toward:
– Reading behaviour before action happens
– Building patience in pursuit of stronger imagery
– Working scenes rather than chasing sightings

We begin encouraging participants to think beyond single images, toward sequences and narrative moments.

Evening sessions may include workflow refinement or image critique.

South Luangwa offers some of Africa’s best predator interactions.
Today we focus on:
– Tracking and positioning for predator movement
– Managing difficult light situations
– Capturing tension and interaction

Rather than simply documenting wildlife, we work toward creating emotionally compelling frames that convey atmosphere and story.

Midway through the safari, attention turns inward.

Participants are encouraged to:
– Identify emerging shooting styles
– Refine compositional preferences
– Move from reactive shooting to intentional creation

This is often the turning point where images shift from “record shots” to meaningful storytelling work.

Structured review sessions help shape direction for the remaining days.

With growing familiarity in the environment, we now revisit key techniques with greater depth.

Focus areas may include:
– Layered compositions
– Using negative space
-Working low-angle perspectives
– Simplifying complex scenes

This day is about refinement, doing the basics exceptionally well.

Our final full day is designed to consolidate everything learned throughout the Masterclass.

Participants now approach sightings differently:
– Slower
– More deliberate
– With stronger visual intent

We focus on:
– Story-driven shooting
– Portfolio-strength images
– Shooting with purpose rather than volume

The evening includes a final optional image review, celebrating progress made during the safari.

Following a relaxed morning and optional short drive (time permitting), we transfer back to Mfuwe Airport for onward travel.

While the safari may conclude here, the goal of the Masterclass is that the learning continues, equipping you with tools and perspective that extend well beyond South Luangwa.

Or continue with one of the optional safari extensions in the Lower Zambezi Valley or on a walking safari in South Luangwa

Short road transfer/game drive from lodge to airstrip.

Fixed wing air transfer from Mfuwe to Lusaka airport.

For guests seeking a deeper wilderness experience, we also offer an optional five-night walking safari extension in South Luangwa.

Walking safaris allow you to slow the pace and focus on:
– Tracking and spoor photography
– Close-up details of flora and insects
– Birds and small mammals
– Landscape and storytelling images

This extension is ideal for photographers who enjoy a more intimate style of photographic safari, working on foot and capturing details often missed from a vehicle.

Extend your journey with an optional four-night Lower Zambezi photo safari at Anabezi Camp, one of Zambia’s premier riverfront lodges.

This extension introduces a completely different photographic environment, with opportunities for:
– Canoe-based wildlife photography
– Boat safaris on the Zambezi River
– Elephants and buffalo along the riverbanks
– Unique low-angle river perspectives

The Lower Zambezi provides a beautiful contrast to South Luangwa, combining vehicle, boat, and water-based photography in a single extension.

“South Luangwa was everything we’d hoped for as photographers. The sightings were great, we spent proper time with a leopard one afternoon and had wild dogs on another drive. What really made the difference was having the time and space to shoot properly. No rushing off after a quick look. The guide understood what we were trying to get from each scene, whether it was positioning for light or waiting for behaviour. It felt like the whole experience was built around photography, not just ticking off sightings.”
